The next event in the Sister Jeanne File Art History Memorial Lecture Series at Daemen College will be “Storytelling as a Fine Art.” This event will begin at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 10, in Rosary Hall on the Daemen campus, 4380 Main Street, in Amherst. Admission is free to the public.

Joan Goldberg, award-winning lecturer, instructor, practicing artist and storyteller, will deliver the lecture.

The Sister Jeanne File Art History Memorial Lecture Series is named after Jeanne File, OSF, an art historian and internationally known calligrapher, who was one of seven Sisters of St. Francis who founded the former Rosary Hill College in 1947.

“This lecture series honors Sister Jeanne’s well-known passion for art history by featuring scholars with a range of backgrounds,” stated Dr. Laura Sommer, Director of the Daemen College Department of Fine and Performing Arts. “It will allow her memory to continue inspiring others to explore the arts.”

Sister Jeanne File served as head of the Rosary Hill College Art Department for its first 24 years, writing and designing the early curriculum for what was, initially, the largest program at the College. She delivered public lectures on art history across the country and attended numerous art conferences in Europe. Sister Jeanne was, also, a pioneer of educational television in Western New York, teaching a semester of classes on WNED-TV in 1961. In 1997, following her retirement from Daemen, she was honored for her career accomplishments by the Daemen College Alumni Board of Governors.

Upon leaving her Daemen College residence a few years later, Sister Jeanne moved to Stella Niagara, New York, where she lived until her death March 1, 2010.
