This fall, the Daemen College Student Veterans Association (SVA) gathered together for a project that helped raise awareness as well as funding support for two important causes.
Members of the SVA raised $200, which was sent to the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Western New York for breast cancer research. The Daemen SVA also raised money to purchase gift cards for the Western New York Veterans Housing Coalition, for food purchases for homeless veterans.
SVA members created and sold pink and white Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets to members of the Daemen College campus community. Twenty five per cent of the profit went to the Komen Foundation; another twenty five per cent went to the Western New York Veterans Housing Coalition.
“We wanted to do something to raise awareness and some funding as well,” said Daemen Student Veterans Alliance founder and leader Frank Grillo. “Many of us just left the combat zones and are looking to help support our fellow soldiers in any way we can.
“Teams of six people at a time would meet at my house during Bills games for food and bracelet making. Each bracelet is made of what we call in the military ‘550 cord or parachute cord.’ Each full strand can hold 550 pounds. The cord works terrifically well for what are also known as survival bracelets, which we adapted to create the Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets.”
Members of the Daemen SVA presented the funds to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in the form of a not-to-be-missed check (photo below).
