Daemen Earns National College of Distinction and Program Honors

Jul 21, 2017

AMHERST, N.Y. – Daemen College has been selected for the 10th consecutive year as a national College of Distinction in recognition of the institution’s excellence in undergraduate higher education and innovative learning experiences offered to students.

The college has also earned new special field of study distinctions in business, education, and nursing in honor of its expert blending of the liberal arts with professional programming.

“We are pleased that Daemen has once again earned this prestigious national designation and that three of our high-quality programs have been singled out for academic excellence,” said Daemen President Gary A. Olson. “This distinction reflects our faculty and staff’s deep commitment to student success.”

As a 2017-18 College of Distinction, Daemen has distinguished itself in four areas considered key to an effective undergraduate education, including student engagement, great teaching, creating a vibrant campus community, and successful outcomes.

To receive this designation, a college’s curriculum must emphasize such core competencies as critical thinking, writing, oral skills, research, and global perspective, and offer dynamic out of-classroom learning and study abroad programs.

“Our goal with Colleges of Distinction is to select the best schools that are focused on the student experience and producing the most well-rounded graduates who are prepared for a global society and economy,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction. “We applaud Daemen College for its top quality curriculum, enriching the college experience with high-impact educational practices, and providing students with an education that stretches far beyond what is typically required from an academic major.”

As noted by Colleges of Distinction, the best colleges provide innovative, engaged experiences for successful careers, active citizenship, and lifelong learning. Nominations for this distinction are made by high school counselors and educators.

New field of study distinctions were granted after a comprehensive vetting process, selecting schools that included qualities such as accreditation, breadth of program, and a track record for success.

“Building upon its exceptional liberal arts curriculum and its impressive engagement of effective practices, Daemen stands out as a leader in professional education,” said Schritter.

Daemen’s programs were cited for:

  • Business – The program keeps future leaders ahead of the curve and ready to progress in the fast-paced, modern world of business.
  • Education – Future educators are bolstered by an enriching liberal arts perspective, allowing them to develop into empathetic, creative, and positive mentors for their students.
  • Nursing – The program provides a well-rounded perspective that allows future nurses to develop abilities to take action, even in high-pressure situations, and to think on their feet, as well as to care deeply for their patients.
