Experts to Discuss New Refugee and Immigration Policies

Mar 20, 2017

AMHERST, N.Y. – President Donald Trump’s refugee and immigration policies, including a travel ban from several Muslim-majority countries, will be discussed by a panel of experts from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 4 in Daemen College’s Wick Campus Center Social Room.

The panel discussion, “The Myths and Realities of Trump Policies on Refugees and Immigrants,” will examine the new administration’s policies, the controversial travel ban barring refugees from six Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. and its impact on area refugees, protecting refugee and immigrant rights, and strategies to address the policies.

“Our goal for this event is to help shed light on the significant impact these policies will have on refugees, a population that locally has changed the face of the Buffalo Niagara region,” said Cheryl Bird, executive director of Daemen’s Paul A. Saffrin Center for Sustainability and Civic Engagement, which is sponsoring the event. “Through various service learning opportunities, many of our students work with refugees in our community, and we remain committed to our efforts in assisting these families.

Panelists will include:

  • Julie Algubani, civil rights/social justice activist.
  • Dr. Myron Glick, founder and chief medical officer at the Jericho Road Community Health Center.
  • Julia Hall, Amnesty International’s expert on counter-terrorism and human rights.
  • Karen Scott, executive director at Journey’s End Refugee Services.
  • Claude Welch, human rights expert and SUNY Distinguished Professor of Political Science.

The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided. Additional information is available by contacting Cheryl Bird at cbird@daemen.edu.
