Effective Note Taking

The following tips will make your notebook a useful resource:

  • Use three-ring loose-leaf notebooks. You can remove notes and update them as necessary.
  • Take shorthand notes during class to capture a subject's main ideas. Expand on them later.
  • Use abbreviations, acronyms and contractions to save space and time.
  • Perfection is not necessary. Messy notes are better than no notes. Rewrite notes in your own words later.
  • Copy whatever is written on the board.
  • Pay attention to verbal cues and summarize your professor's comments.
  • Write notes on the right-hand side of the page. List key terms on the left-hand side of the same page. Write a summary of your notes at the bottom of the page.
  • Use a second note page for listing your questions and their answers. Write potential test questions at the bottom of the page.
  • Highlight or color code your notes to stay organized.
  • Stay alert and concentrate on the topic being discussed.

"I think one of the most crucial aspects of the Daemen curriculum is the required internship. I was an accounting intern for both a private health care company and a certified public accounting firm. I was able to apply lessons learned in the classroom to real business situations. When my internships were over, each company offered me a full-time position."
