Daemen College and South China University of Technology Art Exchange Will Promote Creativity and Cross-Cultural Collaboration
Intersecting Currents: Daemen College and South China University of Technology Art Exchange Promotes Creativity and Cross-Cultural Collaboration: In December 2009, students and faculty from the Daemen College Department of Visual and Performing Arts traveled to Guangzhou, China, to begin an international exchange of art work with students and faculty of South China University of Technology (SCUT). The exhibition, Intersecting Currents: New York Artists at SCUT, represents the first collaborative step between the two institutions; a return exhibit, of artwork by students and faculty of South China University of Technology, will arrive at Daemen in fall, 2010, simultaneously with the first class of Chinese art and graphic design students from SCUT, who be attending Daemen.
The idea of exchanging artwork internationally was initiated in the fall of 2007, during a visit to SCUT by Daemen administrators; specific plans for the collaboration went forward during a follow-up meeting, also in China, in March, 2009.
Daemen College Begins Wide-Ranging Collaboration with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and Sichuan University.
Daemen College has entered into distinct and unusual academic collaborations with two major Chinese universities: Beijing University of Chinese Medicine [BUCM] and Sichuan University. Beginning this fall, the collaborations are structured to focus on specific areas for innovative research and study, in the areas of chronic wounds, sustainable communities, English, and the visual arts. A third agreement was signed with China Services International in Beijing, an agency providing specialized education for Chinese health care and governmental professionals, for which Daemen will provide English language cultural immersion programs.
Daemen College Receives Recognition Award from National Wildlife Federation
Daemen College has received a National Wildlife Federation Campus Ecology Recognition Award for 2006. This award is based in part on the efforts of Daemen students enrolled in IND209 [Campus Environmental Service Learning] in the Fall of 2005. These students conducted initial energy use estimates for several buildings on campus and began an education campaign to encourage energy conservation on campus. NWS Campus Ecology special recognition is a benefit for members who have committed to reduce net emissions by 30% by 2020, approximately 2% per year, and have reduced emissions on campus by 2% during the current academic year. Colleges and universities that have accomplished the 2% reduction receive a Certificate of Recognition for the academic year and will be showcased in the "Campus Ecology Yearbook". For more information, contact Professor Brenda Young and Professor Kevin Kegler.
