Biotechnology in Healthcare

In August of 2004, The Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) in the U.S. Department of Education awarded a $214,596 grant to the Natural Science Department at Daemen College for Biotechnology in Healthcare. Thirty-eight percent of the total cost of the program is funded by FIPSE, with the remaining sixty-two percent funded by Daemen College, Pitzer College, and New College of Florida. The Biotechnology in Healthcare activities began September 1, 2004 and extended to August 31, 2007.

Six higher education institutions from The United States (3) and the European Union (3) will implement a consortium. The three US colleges are Daemen College, lead (Amherst, New York), Pitzer College (Claremont , CA) and New College of Florida, (Sarasota, FL). The three EU colleges are: Athlone Institute of Technology, lead (Athlone, Ireland), Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, University of Trier (Birkenfeld, Germany), and Central Ostrobothnia Polytechnic (Kokkola, Finland).

The consortium has developed a model for a one-semester international exchange of science students. The program is educating students in aspects of biotechnology related to healthcare, specifically wound care research, and will help prepare students in the health care professions to better address pressing health needs that require interdisciplinary team approaches and are global in scope.

"I think one of the most crucial aspects of the Daemen curriculum is the required internship. I was an accounting intern for both a private health care company and a certified public accounting firm. I was able to apply lessons learned in the classroom to real business situations. When my internships were over, each company offered me a full-time position."
