Teacher/Leader Quality Partnership
In September of 2013, Daemen College was awarded $200,000 for the Teacher/Leader Quality Partnership through The New York State Education Department. The Education and the Natural Sciences Department at Daemen are partnering with the Buffalo Public Schools and the Catholic Diocese to improve student achievement in math and science. This year, the project will extend to include The Aloma D. Johnson Fruit Belt Charter School, where Daemen College already has a collaborative partnership. This is the 15th year Daemen College has been awarded funds for this competitive program for a total of over $2.2 million since 1999. Jeff Arnold, Assistant Professor of Education and Director of Daemen's Teacher Leader Quality Partnership, serves as project director.
Authorized by the No Child Left Behind Act, New York State's Teacher/Leader Quality Partnership (TLQP) program aims at improving the academic success of New York's students by improving the quality of their teachers. The program awards competitive grants to partnerships consisting of an institution of higher education and its teacher education division, a college (or division) of arts and sciences, and at least one high-need school district. Drawing on their respective experiences, skills, and knowledge, the partners work together to design and implement professional development programs that will help both pre-service and in-service teachers and school administrators meet the needs of their students.
The Daemen College TLQP project has been serving high-need Buffalo schools since 1999 and supports a learning community based on peer review and mentoring relationships among pre-service and paid in-service educators, as well as college faculty. The overall goal and purpose of the project is to maintain a professional learning community committed to active discourse and meaningful collegial participation using research based protocols, such as the New York State Academy for Teaching and Learning (NYSATL) peer review process, to improve standards (Common Core) based instruction and increase P-16 student achievement in math and science.
Throughout the academic year, the Partnership provides a range of professional development opportunities for teachers and principals. Each summer, the College hosts a Summer Program, a three-week project aligned with the Buffalo Public Schools professional development plan. The summer program provides participants the opportunity to research, design and create learning experiences for a summer service-learning project.
