Social Work Department

In September of 2013, Joanne Cannavo, associate professor of Social Work, was awarded $10,000 from The Health Foundation of Western & Central NY for a project titled, "Investing in an Elder Competent Workforce: Relationship-Building and Education for the Elderly in the Community through Social Work Geriatric Clinical Practice."

As part of the project, more than 20 senior-level Social Work students of Dr. Cannavo's Generalist Practice III SW 424 course will partner with Compeer of Greater Buffalo to mentor the geriatric population as well as educate and support their population regarding coping with chronic illness, which may include dementia for some elderly clients.

The College received an additional $20,000 for implementation.

"I think one of the most crucial aspects of the Daemen curriculum is the required internship. I was an accounting intern for both a private health care company and a certified public accounting firm. I was able to apply lessons learned in the classroom to real business situations. When my internships were over, each company offered me a full-time position."
