Bringing together people and resources to improve lives and strengthen communities

More than 500 volunteers are being mobilized as Daemen College prepares to take part in the twenty-second annual Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), April 23, 24, & 25, 2010.  Last fall, Daemen was selected by Youth Service America as one of only 88 Lead Agencies nationwide to host this three-day community event.  Established in 1988, GYSD is celebrated in over 100 countries and is now the largest annual service event in the world.

Student, youth, and adult volunteers, as well as business and community leaders will participate in a variety of service and outreach projects throughout the weekend. These will include 16 community gardening, neighborhood clean-up, and environmental literacy projects focused in four distressed neighborhoods in the City of Buffalo: Seneca Babcock; the lower West Side; the Central West Side, and the Fruit Belt.

Global Youth Service Day will be led by the Colleges Center for Sustainable Communities & Civic Engagement and Department of Service Learning.

A Volunteer Kick-Off Reception is being planned for Friday, April 23 from 4:00-6:00 pm at State Farm Insurance, 555 Niagara Street, Buffalo, NY. The outdoor celebration will welcome project volunteers and partners, as well as educational leaders, elected officials, and the local community. Approximately 150 people are expected to attend. Food, music, and family-friendly activities will also be a part of the celebration. An exhibit/networking area will be provided at the Kick-Off Reception for GYSD partners and sponsors to display their literature.

"I think one of the most crucial aspects of the Daemen curriculum is the required internship. I was an accounting intern for both a private health care company and a certified public accounting firm. I was able to apply lessons learned in the classroom to real business situations. When my internships were over, each company offered me a full-time position."
