Keeping Your Computer Clean

Over time your computer can get filled with an extraordinary amount of unwanted programs, files and junk! Below are a few SUGGESTIONS for cleaning out your computer and keeping it running fast and smooth.

Windows Updates:
If you have an internet connection, go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.  All Windows Updates to scan your computer. Click "Express" to begin the install process. Once they are all installed your computer will be secured from many vulnerabilities. You can also download and install the most recent versions of other Microsoft software including, Media Player.

Removing Programs:
Go to your Control Panel, click on ADD/REMOVE Programs and look for installed programs with names containing "Search," "Toolbar," "Deal," "Save," or any other unwanted programs.  Highlight the program and click the "Change/Remove" button. All programs are a little different but follow the directions to complete the remove process. Restart your computer if it prompts and repeat the process until all the junk programs are gone.

Cleaning Tools:
Go and download a free or trial copy of Ad Aware, Windows Defender (formerly Microsoft AntiSpyware), Web Root, or No Adware and also CWShredder.  Install them and check for definition updates.  Have each program run a full scan of your computer. These will find and remove nearly all hidden and any left over remnants of junk programs on your computer.

Virus Scanning:
If you are a student on-campus install our free Norton Antivirus Utility. If you are commuter with a computer at home or a laptop, you will have to purchase your own copy of Norton Anti virus. You can find it at you favorite on-line computer software store or visit your favorite computer software store. The price Norton Anti virus is about $50.
As a free alternative, go to housecall.trendmicro.com and click on "SCAN NOW, it's Free!"  Internet Explorer is required for this. An up-to-date scan of your computer will begin.
