The Interdisciplinary Consortium for Global Health (ICGH)

As members of The Interdisciplinary Consortium for Global Health (ICGH), Dr. Ed Clausen (Dean of Academic Affairs, Daemen College) along with Quinn Owen (University of Wisconsin), Giovanni Deodato (Director of the Silk Homes Project), Lars Hallstrom (St.Francis University), Laurie Chan (University of Northern British Columbia), Justine Tutuska (Director of Health Care Studies, Daemen College), and Dr. Michael Brogan (Dean of Health and Human Services, Daemen College) met with the Laotian Minister of Health, Dr. Ponmek Dalaloy in Laos, PDR.  The ICGH, which includes Daemen College as a member institution, will work on WHO projects, as well as a maternity waiting home project in Laos, PDR.

The “Silk Homes” project (maternal waiting home) provides health education, skill based training (i.e. silk, handmade paper, bamboo production) and a place for safe delivery to women coming from remote locations in Laos, where medical services are not available.

Women are taught skills in areas such as silk weaving and papermaking with the hope that they will be better able to support their families and transfer the skills to their communities.
