Service Learning in Uganda

In January 2014, Justine Tutuska, Chair of Health Care Studies, and four students participated in service learning projects at the Bethlehem Parent School and Orphanage and Rakai Women's Group in Uganda. The group assisted in a variety of projects which included building onto the girl's dormitory, training 9 nurses, teachers and community leaders in becoming instructors of infant massage for their local communities, and teaching educational sessions on HIV. A session on menstruation was also given and the group provided cloth menstrual pad kits to the girls. Clothing was also provided to all of the secondary school children and solar lights to the school and women in the village of Nakagongo.

The Global Programs Office serves as an information resource to help international students adjust to the United States, the Western New York area, and the Daemen community. We work with the departments of the College to address and advocate for the needs of our international students. We are responsible for issuing visa documents and advising students on immigration matters. We provide programming and orientation to make the most of your experience here at Daemen. We are also available for any current student who is interested in a study abroad experience, please stop by our office which is located in Canavan Hall.

"I think one of the most crucial aspects of the Daemen curriculum is the required internship. I was an accounting intern for both a private health care company and a certified public accounting firm. I was able to apply lessons learned in the classroom to real business situations. When my internships were over, each company offered me a full-time position."
