Eat Well, Live Well Challenge...

The Employee Wellness Committee invites you to join in the Eat Well, Live Well Challenge.  The goal of this eight-week, competitive challenge is to encourage individuals to move more, increase the amount of fruits and vegetables consumed and learn how to lead healthier, better lives. Participants are asked to do three simple things:

  1. Using a pedometer, count and record your steps each day.
  2. Count and record the number of cups of fruit and vegetables eaten each day.
  3. Aim to make at least one meal a day follow the “half plate guide”.

Participants can choose their challenge goals, post and track their results online, communicate with others, send data in from their phone and earn badges along the way! In addition, participants will also have the option of confidentially tracking their weight and blood pressure.

Sponsored by Wegmans, more than 400 companies throughout Western and Central New York now participate in the Eat Well, Live Well Challenge. Are YOU up for the Challenge?

If so, here's the scoop:
Our Challenge will begin on Sunday, March 10th and end on Saturday, May 4th. Participating employees will be provided with a measuring guide to track their fruit & vegetable consumption and a pedometer to track their daily steps.

***Participation in the Lunch 'n Learn session is beneficial, but not mandatory, to participate in the Challenge.
***We know that support is crucial to success... so, if you have a family member who would like to participate with you, they are welcome to do so! Family members will also have access to the online system and additional pedometers are available for purchase at $5 each.

If you're up for the Challenge, contact Kelly at kpogore@daemen.edu or x7883 to sign up. Don't forget to indicate if you will be attending the Lunch 'n Learn on 2/20 and if you will be purchasing an extra pedometer for a participating family member. Employees who sign up for the Challenge by Friday, February 22nd will be guaranteed a pedometer. Pedometers for those who sign up after February 22nd will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Lunch 'n Learn Series...

Our first Lunch 'n Learn Seminar for 2013 was held on Tuesday, January 29th.  We were joined by Diana Monaco from the FDA for a discussion of food labels and healthy eating, which included the opportunity to sample healthy snacks.

On Wednesday, February 20th, our Lunch 'n Learn session explored the upcoming Eat Well, Live Well Challenge. Participants enjoyed a delicious salad bar and explored how to measure and increase their daily fruit and vegetable intake!

On Thursday, March 28th we were joined by Sarah Smith of BCBSWNY to discuss Stress Management.  Sarah gave us great insights on how to reduce and better tolerate the stress in our daily lives!

On Tuesday, April 9th our full-capacity crowd enjoyed a fantastic presentation about Fitness That Works, a book filled with Simple Moves to help us improve our health by moving more during the work day. Daemen's own Jeff Sage, with help from one of his 5th year Athletic Training students, provided us with great information about how to incorporate these movements into our day-to-day routines and even a little bit of practice!

Our final Lunch 'n Learn seminar for this semester was held on Wednesday, May 1st.  During this session, we explored the topic of Eldercare including housing options, financial burdens, and other aspects of care for the elderly. Many thanks to Barbara Tschamler for sharing her time and insights!
