Academic Coaching FAQ
Finding a Coach:
How do I contact a coach?
To contact a coach, email a message such as:
"I am currently taking (course) and would like to meet with a coach. I can meet at the following times: (example) Sunday: 12:00-4:00; Mondays, Wednesdays: 1:00-3:00; Tuesday: 10:00-1:00 and 4:00-6:00."
Please be sure to include ALL available times to improve chances for a schedule match. After the coach replies, be sure to send a message to confirm your appointment and record it in YOUR planner.
Who are the academic coaches in the Learning Center?
Academic coaches are students who have successfully completed the course they are coaching, were recommended by the instructor of the course, and have completed training.
How does academic coaching work?
Academic coaching is provided by the College and is free to all Daemen College students. Students contact academic coaches by email to set up a time to meet. All sessions are held at the Learning Center in the RIC. Students should bring their notes, books, and any questions they may have. We encourage students to meet with academic coaches early in the semester for the most effective use of this service.
What can academic coaches help me with?
Academic coaches can help you with many tasks including:
- reviewing/clarifying textbook and lecture information helping you understand and practice math concepts
- assisting you in focusing on what is most important as you prepare for tests.
What can I expect during an academic coaching session?
Academic coaches can help students to understand course content, clarify confusing concepts through examples and associations, and provide opportunities for guided practice. Please note that academic coaches are here to assist the student and DO NOT do the work for the student.
How can I prepare for my academic coaching session?
The first step is to figure out what is causing your problem(s). Are you having trouble with note taking, your writing skills, reading skills, understanding lecture or textbook material, etc.? After you identify what you are having trouble with, you need to email the academic coach. There are two ways you can do this:
- Go to "Find A Coach" at the Learning Center. You will find course and coach email information in the binder.
- Visit www.daemen.edu/coach .
The academic coach is here to help you after you have done all you can. Make sure you bring your notes, books and any questions you may have to the academic coaching session. Your hard work, combined with the assistance of an academic coach, can make a difference.
How can I become an academic coach?
Academic coaches are students who have successfully completed the course they are coaching and were recommended to the Learning Center by the instructor of the course. Academic coaches complete a training program and attend staff meetings.
Academic coaches are usually paid through Work Study and the College Work Program at minimum wage.
