Freshmen Orientation: Frequently Asked Questions click on a question to see the answer - click to close I came for a campus tour and Open House, do I need to attend orientation? YES!!! Orientation is a two-day intensive program to aid ALL new students with their transition to Daemen. It is not a repeat of the information given during your tour or Open House. This program digs much deeper, providing you with all the tools needed to be successful at Daemen. All new students are required to attend an orientation program. Do I have to stay overnight in the residence hall? Yes, an overnight stay is required. Many students who live near the campus and will be commuting during the school year often ask why an overnight stay is required. We ask you to stay overnight on campus because the orientation program goes late into the evening and starts early on the second day. In addition, we know from past programs that you will meet more students and become better acquainted with the campus by staying overnight in the residence halls. I am an HEOP student. Am I still required to attend orientation? As a HEOP student you are required to register for freshmen orientation. All students who have been accepted into the HEOP program must register for the first orientation session on July 16/17. Is transportation available from the airport, bus and train stations to campus? For those traveling by plane, train, or bus, Daemen is only a short taxi ride to campus. In the past, students have used Kenmore Cab (716 876-3030, 716 876-2300) and Action Taxi (446-1580). Where do I park during the program? Where do I go to check in? For the summer program, students and family members may park in any Daemen College lot. Parking passes are not required at this time. Check-in for students and families will be held in the Wick Center. Will I receive a confirmation that you have received my reservation and payment for the program? You should receive a letter confirming your reservation for the orientation program approximately one week after we've received your registration form. How long does the orientation program last? Orientation for freshmen students is a two-day program. You are required to attend the duration of the program. The program begins at 9:00am and ends at around midnight on the first day; and from 9:00am - 4:30pm on the second day. May I register for classes without turning in my immunization records to health services? New York State Public Health Laws 2165 and 2167 require all college students to show proof of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella as well as making an informed decision about having the meningitis vaccine before being able to register for classes. All college students, but particularly those who will be living on campus, are urged by the NYS Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control to have the meningitis vaccine. A new vaccine, called Menactra, is effective for more than eight years. The old vaccine was effective for three to five years. Menactra prevents people from being carriers of the bacteria which the old vaccine did not. When calling for your appointment for your college physical exam, let the staff know you will be wanting the Menactra vaccine at the time of your visit. This documentation needs to be on file with Health Services before a student will be allowed to register for classes. There are no exceptions. Send your records to Susan Girard in Health & Insurance Services NOW to avoid complications in registering for your classes. When do I register for classes? All freshmen students are pre-registered for their first semester by the Academic Advisement office. You must complete and send in the advisement questionnaire included in your orientation packet to be registered for classes. You will receive a printed copy of your schedule at orientation if you are health compliant. Can I bring another person with me to the orientation program? We offer a family orientation, designed specifically for parents/guardians and family members. There is a separate cost for this program, and information is included on page 3. The student program is for orientation participants only. The family program runs concurrently with, but separate from, the student program. What happens if I don't attend orientation? Orientation is a requirement for matriculation at Daemen College. You will not be able to register for courses without attending an orientation program. How do I get my Student ID and Daemen Computer Account Information? You will receive your student ID and computer account information during the orientation program. How can I find out about the student services on campus? Information on student services is included in the orientation program. How do I pay for Orientation? Student fees for Orientation will be added to your tuition bill. The orientation fee pays for food, lodging, activities, program staffing, and all program materials used during the Summer Orientation and Fall Welcome Back Programs.
