A paint brush, a palette and a canvas. These are the tools an artist uses to perfect their craft. Experience, intellect, patience, compassion and love are the provisions parents will rely upon as they adapt to parenting a college student.

The little that parents and guardians say to their children immediately prior to leaving them at college and heading for home (following orientation) will have a profound impact on how those students adapt to or progress through college. Surprised? Angered? You shouldn't be. By this point, parents and guardians have done all they can to lay the moral, ethical and spiritual foundation, which will help guide the decisions their sons and daughters will make while in college. Yes, the college experience has a tremendous impact upon the lives of students, usually a very positive one. But, it has an equally significant impact upon the lives of parents and guardians. This program prepares parents for what lies ahead.

Just remember, it's okay as a parent or guardian to have that nauseous feeling in the pit of your stomach or that lump near the bottom of your throat as you leave for home without them. Believe me, they'll experience it, too. It is how you all work together to make college an exceptional experience that is important. This session is a sure fire way to begin that process.

During this humorous, lighthearted, yet highly educational program, parents' fears are alleviated and their most basic and pressing questions are answered. We'll discuss:

·         What changes parents should expect as their children progress through the Five Stages of College Life

·         The increased academic demands of college

·         Helping your children cope with long distance relationships

·         Eating habits and the Freshman "15"

·         Learning to commute or live with a roommate

·         Fiscal responsibility (and how to help them avoid credit card deception and spending temptations)

·         The importance of maintaining consistent communication (and the $50 surprise letter!)

·         How to prepare your student to manage freedom (or be prepared to experience failure)

·         How well you know your first year college student-to-be!

·         The importance of getting involved on campus
