Got Ink? Part 4

By Steven Zapel

The winner of The INSIGHT’s “Got Ink” contest for the February 28, 2011 issue is Jolene Scholl. Jolene’s tattoo consists of a skull with roses and was her second tattoo. She had the tattoo done at Upstate Ink on Niagara Street, by Nick, the owner of the shop.

Jolene chose the image of a skull and roses for several reasons. The skull represents death, while the roses represent life. They are fused together to symbolize that life and death are both part of the same cycle every person or living being experiences. The beauty of life coincides with the ugliness of death.

Jolene chose to place the tattoo on her right foot. When asked about why she chose her foot she said “I heard that the foot is one of the most painful places to get a tattoo and that intrigued me to get it there.  I wanted to know if the rumors were true.  I also like the look of tattoos on feet; it adds a little decoration to an overlooked part of the body.”

I asked Jolene what she thinks about tattoos and why she decided to get one. She said, “I think tattoos are a great way to express oneself. Each tattoo should represent the individual and their beliefs. The artwork is a thing of beauty. I find tattoos to be very attractive.”

Her advice for anyone who is considering getting a tattoo is not to panic. She said “it’s no worse than a flu shot.” She said that watching the artist and seeing what they are creating on your body can help you keep your mind off any pain you might feel. The thrill of watching your tattoo come to life makes the experience in the chair worthwhile.

"I think one of the most crucial aspects of the Daemen curriculum is the required internship. I was an accounting intern for both a private health care company and a certified public accounting firm. I was able to apply lessons learned in the classroom to real business situations. When my internships were over, each company offered me a full-time position."
