Why did you choose Daemen College?

4702After being accepted and invited to Scholars Day, I began learning about Daemen opportunities and was drawn to the tight-knit campus community. When I was offered a full scholarship I was stunned. The personal attention that I have received from my professors has not only encouraged me to keep trying when things get overwhelming but has encouraged me to find the career path that is best suited for my aspirations and skills.

Why did you choose your present major?

I chose to study Spanish because of the enthusiastic foreign language teachers that I had in middle school and high school. I had always been an excellent student, but it wasn't until I began taking language classes that I realized what I was truly passionate about. Language learning has enabled me to combine my love of current events, cultural curiosity, and compassion into pursuing a career in human rights or humanitarian affairs.

Please describe your academic experience at Daemen College.

Daemen College is highly regarded by employers, and rightfully so; that means that you should be prepared to work hard to live up to its reputation. The faculty here ask a lot of their students, but they can do so because of the abundance of support that you can find here. Daemen produces highly competitive graduates in the professional world, and its liberal arts education teaches students how to adapt to rapidly changing fields. Adjusting to college-level work is challenging, but I have learned from experience that it is important to not be ashamed to ask for help when you need it.

Please describe any internship, study abroad, service learning or academic experience?

As a requirement for students in the Modern Language Department, I am required to study abroad for at least one semester, and to go to Spain. Although this is an additional financial commitment, studying abroad is an invaluable experience and is a qualification on a resume that stands out to employers. Study abroad involves practical experience no matter what your field of study, and for me, it will not only be a giant leap forward in my language proficiency but a big step into adulthood.

What clubs or organizations have you been a part of at Daemen College? What kinds of things do they do?

I have held many leadership positions on campus including Resident Assistant, President of the Modern Language Student Association, Treasurer of the Education Club, Trustee Scholar volunteer, a member of the Dance & Movement Club, and a member of the Honors Program. In each position I aim to give back and support the campus community, and as you can see it's very easy to find opportunities to get involved!

What is your favorite campus hangout? Why?

My favorite campus hangout is the Ecotrail. Not many people know that it exists so it's a great place to be surrounded by nature and alone with your thoughts. The trail runs the length of the campus and has a creek and benches placed throughout. It's a great place to take a break and relieve some stress!
