Woodhull Institute Nominations
It is indeed a pleasure to seek nominations of student leaders to attend the Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership. A selection committee will meet later this spring to choose twenty women to participate in the Woodhull Institute August 22-24, 2008, just before the beginning of the academic year.
Students for this award will be selected from letters submitted by interested students and nominators. The letter will be a key consideration for selection to participate in the Woodhull Institute. As a nominator or recommendor you are encouraged to make the nominee come alive for the committee in this letter. Rather than submitting a list of accomplishments, the nominator should provide a well-rounded profile of the student being nominated. The letter should include the student’s name, his or her year (class) at Daemen College, and most importantly, demonstrated examples of leadership. Criteria are listed below, as well as some other information, which may be helpful, as nominations and recommendations are formulated.
Leadership criteria for guiding nominations:
1. A student who has had significant, positive impact on the Daemen College campus;
2. A student who is individually in good social standing with the university;
3. A student who has at least a 3.00 GPA in her major;
4. A student who has held leadership positions in campus organizations;
5. A student who has had campus involvement; and/or
6. A student who has made positive societal contributions.
The objective of the Woodhull Institute as it is designed for students from Daemen College is stated as such:
Daemen College, like the Woodhull Institute [for Ethical Leadership], is committed to developing young women who are not just academically and professionally prepared to lead the world, but, most importantly are well prepared in terms of conscience. Through this intensive, top-tier training program, we can assure future employers, colleagues, and family members of Daemen graduates that the Daemen women who have graduated with this experience under their belts will be distinguished by sills that are so needed in the contemporary world: the ability to lead with humanity, honesty, integrity, and vision.

These criteria should be demonstrated in a letter of nomination or recommendation. Know, as well, that as part of the selection process, students will be asked to provide a personal statement defining the applicant’s/nominee’s personal philosophy. In addition to the personal statement, applicants/nominees will also be asked to write an essay on the following topic: Discuss the qualities of leadership you have gained from women who you have admired and provide an example of how these qualities affect you as a person and a leader.
Nominations and supporting materials from the nominees will be due on April 22, 2008. Selection will be made by a Selection Committee. Those selected for this honor will be notified by the beginning of May. Thank you. The letter from the nominator and recommendors, as stated above, will be the key consideration for this award.
