Game Time Woes

By Janik Shaw

If you're a Buffalo Bills fan then the last three games have been hard to watch. In the last three games that the Bills have played, they have struggled both offensively and defensively against their opponents. The problems all began three weeks ago in a game against the New York Jets. In the first quarter of the game both teams were left scoreless. The Bills had possession of the ball first, but only for about two minutes before being forced to punt. The Jets gained possession and kept possession for a majority of the first quarter, slowly making their way up the field before having the ball intercepted by Jairus Byrd of the Bills with two minutes and 44 seconds left on the clock.

The second quarter would be more or less a repeat of the first, with the Jets playing terrific defense against the Bills. The Bills also played some good defense in this quarter. The Jets, however, scored a field goal – the first points of the game. The Bills remained scoreless, and the Jets didn’t score again by the end of the half.

The Jets began to dominate the game in the third quarter, starting off with a 50-yard field goal. They recovered a fumble by the Bills which led to a NY touchdown. The Bills scored a field goal, but the Jets scored another touchdown, making the score 20 to 3 at the end of third. In the fourth, each team scored one touchdown, with the Bills getting a two point conversion. The game ended 27 to 11 with the Bills suffering a tough defeat.

The next two games the Bills played weren’t any better – two blowout losses, the first in Dallas to the Dallas Cowboys. There were early signs that this was going to be a tough game when the Cowboys scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. The Bills scored one touchdown in the second, but this was their only touchdown of the game. The Cowboys scored two more touchdowns in the second, leaving the score at the half 28 to 7. In the third the Cowboys made two field goals, and in the fourth they scored 10 more points, ending the game with a score of 44 to 7. Their game against the Miami Dolphins went the same way, with the Bills losing 35 to 8.

Right now the Bills have a record of 5-5 and are third in the AFC standings behind the Jets and the Patriots, who are in first in the division. The Bills still have a chance to do well if they can break out of this slump and play well in their upcoming games. The Bills play the Jets again Sunday, Nov. 27, and fans are hoping that they don’t see a repeat of their first match-up.

(Editor’s Note – This was written prior to the Nov. 27 game.)
