AMHERST, N.Y. – A lecture on women’s leadership in the political arena, including Hillary Clinton’s presidential candidacy, will be held as part of events planned at Daemen College in celebration of Women’s History Month.

“The Global Dimensions of Women’s Executive Leadership” will be discussed by featured speaker Dr. Farida Jalalzai, associate professor of political science and Hannah Atkins Endowed Chair at Oklahoma State University, at 6:30 p.m. March 28 in the Wick Campus Center Social Room. The lecture is being presented as part of the Daemen History and Politics Event Series.

Jalalzai, who is frequently interviewed in national media, will examine trends that have facilitated the rise of women around the world to president and prime minister leadership roles, and the importance of women’s executive leadership in democracy. She will also explore Clinton’s presidential run and factors that led to her loss in the election.

Among other events scheduled for Women’s History Month are:            

• “What Happened to Miss Simone,” a documentary on the life and career of legendary singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone will be screened at 7:30 p.m. March 20 in the Wick Center Alumni Lounge. Dr. Shawn Kelley, professor of religious studies, will lead a discussion following the film.
• “Unsung Heroes: The History of Women in the Military” will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 21 in the college’s Research and Information Commons Room 120. The event will include a screening of the documentary “Unsung Heroes: The Story of America’s Female Patriots,” and a panel discussion with women veterans who have served in combat.
• A panel of Daemen graduates representing various majors will discuss gender and careers from 5:30 to 7 p.m. March 23 in Rosary Hall. The event will include a presentation of the 2017 SOS Scholarship for Women’s Activism and Leadership, which recognizes a female student who has demonstrated leadership on women’s issues.
