AMHERST, N.Y. – Dr. Alexis Henshaw, an expert on female combatants, will be the keynote speaker for Women’s History Month events planned at Daemen College.

Sponsored by the Daemen Women’s Studies Program, all Women’s History Month events are free and open to the public.

Henshaw’s lecture, “Insurgent Women: Female Combatants in Civil Wars,” will be presented at 7 p.m. March 25 in the Research and Information Commons (RIC) Room 120. She will talk about how women are contributing to war and peace in complex conflicts and why women are often invisible during wartime.

Henshaw, an assistant professor of political science at Troy University, is coauthor of the recently released book, “Insurgent Women: Female Combatants in Civil Wars,” and author of “Why Women Rebel: Understanding Women’s Participation in Armed Rebel Groups.”

She has been a consultant for U.N. Women (United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women), the U.N. Security Council’s Counterterrorism executive director, and several other government organizations.

On March 20, Dr. Karolina Krasuska will discuss “Women and the Holocaust” at 7 p.m. in the Wick Campus Center Social Room. Her discussion will draw from her book, “Women and the Holocaust: New Perspectives and Challenges,” which she co-edited.

Krasuska is an assistant professor at the University of Warsaw, where she also serves as vice director for research at the Institute for the Americas and Europe.  

Other Women’s History Month events planned at Daemen are:

• March 6: A screening of the film “Hiroshima Mon Amour” will be held at 7 p.m. in the Wick Campus Center Alumni Lounge. Set in post-World War II Hiroshima, Japan, this influential French classic film focuses on a brief affair between a French actress and a Japanese architect and their differing perspectives on war.           
• March 20: A poetry reading will be given by local poets Rachelle Toarmino and Theresa Wyatt at 7:30 p.m. in RIC’s third floor lounge.     
• March 27: The 2016 reboot of “Ghostbusters” featuring an all-female cast will be shown at 7 p.m. in RIC Room 120. A post-film discussion will be led by members of the American Association of University Women student organization.               
• March 28: HBO’s recent film, “The Tale,” will be shown at 4 p.m. in Duns Scotus Room 336. The film, written and directed by Jennifer Fox, is based on Fox’s own survival of sexual abuse as a young teenager.
